This, I think stems from technological leaps at an affordable price combined with an inate desire to tell a story and be in the spotlight. Story telling has gone visual and digital at the level of the masses. Everywhere you go, people commonly carry video cameras or digital phones with video capabilities. So capturing a precious moment on camera has become easy. The fact that it is digital mean the you can take pictures / movies indiscriminately and edit out the less desirable parts later at no cost.

Posting compilations on the Internet has become commonplace and satisfies the insatiable need to propagate and promote ones individuality.
