  • Canadians Among the Most Satisfied Employees in the World

According to the latest Randstad Workmonitor survey results, Canadian workers rank among the highest levels of satisfaction on the job compared to employees from other countries.

According to the latest Randstad Workmonitor study, which surveys employees in 32 countries around the world, one out of three Canadians say they are very satisfied with their current employer - placing Canadians amongst the highest employee satisfaction levels reported globally.

The Randstad Workmonitor asked workers from around the world to rank their satisfaction level out of four answer categories (very satisfied, satisfied, not satisfied/not dissatisfied, dissatisfied). Canadian employees ranked the highest amongst the 14 non-European countries surveyed, as nearly one in three (31%) report to be: "very satisfied''. Only Denmark (35%), Luxembourg (33%) and Norway (33%) and Switzerland (32%) reported higher levels of workers being 'very satisfied' with their current employers.

When combining categories, 76 per cent of Canadian workers say they are either "very satisfied" and "satisfied" at work, results that are similar to those in the US (72%) and Australia (73%). "There are a number of reasons why Canadians have more on the job satisfaction than other markets," says Jan Hein Bax, President of Randstad Canada. "With our strong marketplace, employees often find they have more job security and flexibility than other countries, and better work environments."

Job security: The importance of job security has become more significant to employees due to the economic challenges experienced over the last few years. In 2011, Randstad Canada enlisted an independent firm to survey over 7,000 Canadians and the results clearly show that job security is a factor that Canadian's truly care about. Over half (53%) of survey respondents ranked job security as one of the most important factors to consider when choosing an employer.

"Job satisfaction is about more than just salary and compensation. Many of today's employees are looking for a sense of security, one in which they do not fear that their jobs will be in jeopardy," added Bax.

Flexibility: Because of the looming labour shortages, more and more employers are becoming sensitive to their employees' needs. Canadian organizations are putting in extra efforts to make sure their employees are evolving in a flexible and accommodating environment that will help them achieve a suitable work life balance, another important value for Canadian workers.

"Forward-looking organizations know that they need to adapt to the needs of a diversified workforce to keep their employees happy and retain their talent'', adds Bax.

Work environment: Corporate culture and work environment is a key determinant for Canadians making the choice to stay with an organization. The results from last year's independent survey also highlight that a pleasant work atmosphere ranked as the number one, most important factor (according to six out of ten respondents), when seeking an employer.

"Even with the stresses and pressure the workplace can sometimes bring, Canadians find great comfort in their relationships with colleagues and managers," explains Bax.

"Even by taking part in corporate social and charitable activities, employees gain a sense of pride that is in tune with their need to contribute positively to society. Many Canadian businesses support employee volunteering programs, and this resonates well with the values of Canadian workers."

The Randstad Workmonitor: After the successful introduction of the Workmonitor in the Netherlands in 2003 and more recently in Germany, the survey now covers 32 countries around the world, encompassing Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas. The Randstad Workmonitor is published four times a year, making both local and global trends in mobility regularly visible over time. The quantitative study is conducted via an online questionnaire among a population aged 18-65, working a minimum of 24 hours a week in a paid job (not self-employed). The minimal sample size is 400 interviews per country, using Survey Sampling International. Research for the first wave of 2012 was conducted from January 20 to February 14, 2012.

  • Government of Canada Invests to Help Youth in Nova Scotia Get Jobs
The Government of Canada highlighted support for youth in Nova Scotia to help them gain the skills, knowledge and experience they need to enter and succeed in the job market. The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister responsible for Nova Scotia, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, made the announcement during an open house at Summer Street Industries.

"Our government's top priority is creating jobs and economic growth," said Minister MacKay. "Our government's Youth Employment Strategy is helping youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and prepare for the workforce of tomorrow."

Summer Street Industries is a community organization that helps people with intellectual disabilities maximize their potential and independence. Minister MacKay attended the open house in part to celebrate the successful completion of Summer Street Industries youth employment project, which he announced funding for last year.

Minister MacKay also took the occasion to announce over $2.1 million in federal funding for 18 community organizations across Nova Scotia to help youth overcome barriers to employment. This funding is being provided through the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) and the Youth Awareness program.

With annual funding of more than $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop employment skills, find jobs and stay employed. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which creates thousands of job opportunities for students every summer. Youth Awareness complements YES by promoting youth as the workforce of the future and by expanding their awareness of career and educational opportunities.

Economic Action Plan 2012 proposes an additional $50 million over two years to enhance the Youth Employment Strategy so that more young people can gain tangible skills and experience. This funding will focus on connecting young Canadians with jobs in fields that are in high demand.

Youth employment programs are part of the Government of Canada's broader strategy to create an educated, skilled and flexible workforce. The Government underscored its commitment to this strategy in Canada's Economic Action Plan. A key component of the Plan is to create more and better opportunities for Canadian workers through skills development. To learn more about Canada's Economic Action Plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.

  • Rolling Mix Concrete Job Fair in Edmonton
Windsorites can vie for 30 jobs up for grabs this week. They just aren't in Windsor. They're in Edmonton.

Rolling Mix Concrete of Edmonton is in the Rose City looking for 30 truck drivers and heavy machine mechanics to join their company.

Patty Taverner co-owns Rolling Mix with her husband. She said there is a labour shortage in Alberta right now.

"There’s just too much work. The growth has caused us to run out of employable people. The work is there but we don’t have the people now," Taverner said.

Rolling Mix is a 17-year-old company willing to pay up to $40 per hour. The company is looking for Class A and D drivers.

She said she and her husband did their homework when looking for workers and picking Windsor to host their job fair.

"There are definitely people here who want work," she said. "We understood that there are people here who can drive."

Windsor has Canada's highest unemployment at 10.7 per cent.

"We figure it’s a good place to come pick guys up," said Keith Holloway, the fleet operations manager for Rolling Mix.

Anthony Christo worked at Ford for 13 years. He was laid off in 2008, went back to school for law enforcement and still can't find work.

"Locally, anywhere you look, they’re looking to hire through temp services or part-time. They're not really committing to workers," Christo said.

Christo is a married father of three. He and his wife have discussed moving.

"The kids aren’t too excited about it but you do what you have to do in these times," he said.

The job fair continues Wednesday between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn downtown Windsor at 430 Ouellette Ave.

"It was a little slow [Tuesday] morning," Taverner said. "But the people who have come through have been very interested and very willing to come to Edmonton." (CBC NEWS)

For 10 years, The National Job Fair & Training Expo has been promoting all components of the career development for all individuals, including employment, self-employment, training, education, entrepreneurship and career services. And for 10 years, The National Job Fair & Training Expo has been the recruitment event open the public that showcases the largest number of employers in Ontario. This will not change in 2012: Organizers expect the 20th edition to be held on April 4 and 5, 2012, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, will feature more job offers in Ontario and in other provinces, especially in Saskatchewan and New Brunwsick, returning to a level similar to that one before the recession of 2009. In February 15, the National Job Fair & Training Expo is proud to announce that the Government of Saskatchewan has been confirmed as Major Sponsor for the 20th edition. It is the 5th participation of the Saskatchewan Government since 2007 and their second time as Major Sponsor. The Saskatchewan Recruitment Zone was presented once in 2008, twice in 2009 and now in 2012. With an economy settings records, one of the lowest unemployment rate in Canada resulting in exciting employment opportunities, it is no surprise that Saskatchewan will attract job seekers in all sectors. An important advertising campaign is under way to make the population of the Greater Toronto Area and outlying regions in Ontario aware that there will be outstanding employment and career opportunities from Saskatchewan accessible in Toronto this spring. The National Job Fair & Training Expo has extensive experience working with Saskatchewan employers. Indeed, the fair welcomed over 60 organizations from Saskatchewan since 2007.

More than 600 recruiters, career specialists and admission officers from an outstanding number of 145 to 155 organizations are expected to exhibit for this 20th edition to offer thousands of employment and career oppportunities. The National Job Fair & Training Expo is a reputable event for a decade. It brings to candidates more job, training, education, self-employment, career services and entrepreneurship opportunities than any other event. • English-Sounding Name Job Seekers are Preferred by Canadian Employers
According to a new Canada-wide study from Simon Fraser University, applicants with ethnic-sounding names are less likely to get a call back from potential employers.

Researchers sent thousands of resumes to online job postings in Canadian cities for the study, which was conducted by the Metropolis British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Research on Immigration and Diversity.

On average, resumés with English-sounding names received 35 per cent more callbacks, according to a study supported by Metropolis B.C., a federally funded immigration and diversity research centre.

Recruiters in Toronto and Montreal were 45 per cent more likely to call Alison Johnson over Min Liu, while Vancouverites were 20 per cent more likely to respond to those with English-sounding names.

“The name draws unconditional stereotypes, no matter what else is on the resumé,” said researcher Philip Oreopoulos, a University of Toronto professor.

Fears that people with non-English names would have language troubles prompted recruiters to call Carrie over Xiuying, the study found.

People with Greek names were also less likely to receive callbacks, a surprising result that suggests recruiters put a premium on Anglo-Saxon names rather than a discount on Chinese names, Oreopoulos said.

"We found that there is significant discrimination by name, ethnicity and city of experience," says Krishna Pendakur, co-director of Metropolis. "Employers in cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver significantly discriminate against applicants with common Indian and Chinese names, relative to English names."

The study found that Canadian-born people with English-sounding names are more likely to get a call back for a job interview than internationally-born people, even if the two applicants have the same job experience.

The least discriminatory Canadian city was Vancouver, while Montreal was rated the most. Researchers said employers justified name and immigrant discrimination based on language skill concerns, time limitations and wanting to avoid "bad hires."

In order to combat name-based discrimination, researchers suggest employers mask names when sifting through job applicants and make interview choices based on skills and experience. (Source: CTV)

  • Cranberry Industry in British Columbia Benefits From Government of Canada Funding
Today, Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Member of Parliament for Delta-Richmond East and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice, announced support for the British Columbia Cranberry Marketing Commission to establish a Cranberry Research Centre in the Lower Mainland.

"Our Government's top priority is the economy and Canada's agriculture industry plays a vital role in keeping our economy strong and creating jobs," said Parliamentary Secretary Findlay, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "The new Cranberry Research Centre will conduct research aimed at increasing cranberry yields across British Columbia and Canada, which in turn will bring the potential for jobs and economic growth."

Funding will aid in the construction of a Cranberry Research Centre, the first of its kind in Canada and the fourth such centre in North America. The research centre will serve as a cranberry test and demonstration facility where current and new cranberry varieties can be evaluated using various growing mediums and alternate production techniques.

"The BC cranberry industry is thrilled to receive funding from Western Economic Diversification for our Cranberry Research Centre," said Todd May, President of the BC Cranberry Research Society. "Cranberry farmers deeply appreciate this support and the recognition of the importance of this facility. This acknowledgement further reinforces the dedication and financial commitment of our farming families towards the future of the cranberry industry in British Columbia."

The Government of Canada is providing a $203,000 investment through the Western Diversification Program (WDP) to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of Delta's agricultural economy.

The Government of Canada is committed to defending the interests of Canada's traditional industries and to supporting them as they innovate and grow.

Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.

  • study and go abroad fair fall 2011
Top universities from the UK, USA, Australia, Sweden, Canada and many other countries take part in the Study and Go Abroad Fair fall 2011 circuit to meet with students who are interested in studying abroad. Top-ranked universities include UCL (ranked 4th in the QS World University Rankings 2011) and King’s College London from the UK; the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales from Australia; the Chinese University of Hong Kong; the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and Lund University from Sweden.

“Visitors to the expo have a fantastic opportunity to meet face-to-face with university representatives to find out more about how they can study abroad and make their dreams a reality. We have a great line-up of universities, and an extensive Travel Pavilion for adventure travel and gap year options, volunteer programs and work abroad. I would encourage students to bring their friends and family to this inclusive, free event,” says Katie Idle, Director of Sales and Marketing.

The growing trend of Canadians studying abroad is fuelled by students who are attracted by the greater variety of programs; have a desire to learn about other cultures and experience living abroad or elsewhere in Canada; know that their résumé will be that much more completive when entering the work force; as well as those aware of the difficulty of getting into their chosen programs in Canada. Some programs in Canada, like medicine for example, are notoriously difficult to get into (30% acceptance rate for first-time applicants), especially in BC and Ontario, and many students are not willing to put their lives on hold to keep trying. The Caribbean is the number one destination for Canadians to study medicine abroad, and many of the Caribbean medical schools, such as the University of Avalon in the Netherlands Antilles, one of the exhibitors at the Fair, are fully recognized by ECFMG, WHO, FAIMER/IMED and the MCC, which means that graduates are able to practice anywhere in the world.

The expo starts at 1pm, but visitors are invited to come at 12 noon already to hear guest speaker Jean-Marc Hachey, author and online publisher of The BIG Guide to Living and Working Overseas, as he kicks off a full day of exciting information seminars presented on a range of topics.

Seminar schedules and exhibitor profiles can be found online at www.studyandgoabroad.com, along with details of our Grand Prize Draw. Prizes include a return flight to Australia offered by Fair sponsor Qantas, a two-week Beaches and Reefs Contiki Holidays trip, and a Travel CUTS seven-week volunteer trip to Tanzania.

  • Government of Canada Building a Stronger Economy Through Continuing Commitment to Innovation and Research and Development
The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today highlighted the Government of Canada’s priority to promote innovation, recognizing the crucial role it plays in enhancing the country’s productivity and economic prosperity.

“In 2006, we announced our goal to create the best-educated, most-skilled and most flexible workforce in the world,” the Minister said in an address to the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario. “We’ve backed that commitment since with a track record stronger than any government that came before us. We did so fully recognizing the important role these new investments will play in enhancing our productivity and economic prosperity.”

Since it was first elected, the Harper Government has made significant investments in innovation in every budget, and increased federal funding in science and technology every single year. Canada ranks first among the G-7 countries in terms of expenditures on research and development (R&D) in the higher-education sector as a share of the economy.

In recent years, the Government has emphasized the need to more closely link publicly funded research to business needs, and to obtain greater economic and social value from federal funding for research. “The Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, spelled out in Budget 2011, contains a number of initiatives designed to meet those objectives,” said Minister Flaherty. “By targeting these investments towards innovation we recognized—like any forward-looking business would—the true benefits of investments in research both for short-term advantage and long-term gain.”

The Minister also noted, however, that Canada still lags other nations in overall business expenditures on R&D. He urged the private sector to increasingly make innovation a central component of business strategies to ensure that Canada can compete with the world’s best and transform promising ideas into pioneering results.

Through the years, the Montreal Job and Training Fair has remained the most important and unrivalled event, earning an enviable reputation while defining itself as a major event in province or Quebec.

    Key considerations before you arrive:

    * Ask yourself if you have the skills needed to secure the job you wish to obtain.

    * Revise your CV; make sure to emphasize your studies, work experience and skills and describe your skills clearly.
    * Tell people you know about your job search. The more people who know that you are looking for a job, the greater your chances of obtaining information that could lead to employment.

  • Ontario's clean energy economy creates 5,000 new jobs
Ontario's clean energy economy continues to grow, creating 5,000 new jobs.

Through Ontario's clean energy Feed-in Tariff program, 25 new large-scale renewable energy projects - solar and wind - will provide enough electricity to power more than 280,000 homes or a community the size of Windsor each year. These projects will also help attract approximately $3 billion in new private-sector investment to the province.

These projects will be brought online through the Bruce to Milton reinforcement project, Ontario's largest transmission project in 20 years. The projects will be located in Southwestern Ontario along the Bruce to Milton transmission line, including Tiverton, Woodstock, Strathroy, Seaforth, Paisley and Zurich. So far, more than 2,000 mid-size and large-scale Feed-in Tariff projects have been announced, representing enough electricity each year to power about 900,000 homes.

Ontario is replacing dirty, coal-fired plants with clean, renewable energy like water, wind, solar and bio-energy. This is part of the McGuinty government's plan to keep costs down for families today, while building a clean, modern and reliable electricity system for tomorrow.

Ontario's Green Energy Act is on track to create 50,000 clean energy jobs by the end of 2012. As a result of our actions, over 13,000 jobs have already been created.

    QUICK FACTS

        * The FIT contract offers consist of 14 wind projects in the Bruce area totalling 750 megawatts (MW). In the area west of London there are five wind projects totalling 268.4 MW and six solar wind projects totalling 27.5 MW.
        * Thousands of Ontarians are participating in the microFIT program, with over 10,000 projects already connected or ready to connect.
        * At peak construction, 450 people will be working on the Bruce to Milton transmission project.
        * Since 2009, more than 30 businesses have announced they are setting up or expanding plants in Ontario to manufacture parts for the solar and wind industries.

  • CFNU: Overtime For Nurses in One Year Equals More Than 11,000 Full-Time Jobs
Information from a new study shows that in 2010, registered nurses and nurse supervisors publicly employed in Canada’s health care and social assistance sector, worked a total of 20,627,800 hours of overtime, equivalent to 11,400 full-time jobs.

On average, 14.5% of nurses worked unpaid overtime in 2010, up from 12.9% in 2008. Nurses reporting unpaid overtime worked 4.4 extra hours per week. This is 0.5 hours higher, on average, than in 2008.

For every week in 2010, 19,200 public-sector health care nurses, on average, were absent due to illness or disability. Full-time nurses top all other occupations in rates of illness and disability-related absenteeism.

Full-time nurses top all other occupations in rates of illness and disability-related absenteeism.

“We are not surprised by most of these figures, unfortunately,” said Linda Silas, president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. “They replicate a pattern established in a similar study covering 1987 to 2008. What is alarming is that though the percentage of nurses working paid overtime has decreased, from 21.4% in 2008 to 17.3% in 2010, the percentage of nurses working unpaid overtime has increased. This represents a further squeezing of labour from a workforce which continues to face layoffs.”

Other details from the study are found in “Quick Facts: Overtime and Absenteeism.”

CFNU commissioned this update by Informetrica Ltd. to identify trends in overtime and absenteeism among nurses across Canada.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) meeting at the Winnipeg Convention Centre marks the 30th anniversary of the Federation. The CFNU is Canada’s largest nurses’ organization representing over 176,000 members.

  • New Brunswick Virtual Career Fair 2011
The New Brunswick government, Brunswick News Inc. and CareerBeacon.com have been partnering to produce Atlantic Canada's longest running and most successful virtual career fair over the past seven years.

Each virtual career fair, running every spring and fall, offers candidates approximately 3,000 job and career opportunities to choose from right here in New Brunswick.  The 15th Virtual Career Fair is being held from May 18 to May 29 at www.careerbeacon.com/NBen

"This unique strategic partnership ensures businesses will not be crippled by a shortage of skilled workers due to the increase of Baby Boomers and Traditionalists leaving the workforce ... Communicating digitally with the most technologically sophisticated generation, Gen Y, will make New Brunswick an increasingly attractive opportunity to learn, work and grow professionally," explained Dan Cormier, Senior Business Development Officer of CareerBeacon.com.

Minister’s message for the 15th Virtual Career Fair

As Minister responsible for Post-secondary Education, Training and Labour, I am pleased that the Government of New Brunswick will team up once again with CareerBeacon.com for the 15th Virtual Career Fair being held from May 18 to May 29. This online recruitment event is a valuable resource for both job seekers and the province’s employers.

As a province, we are putting New Brunswick on the path to building a labour force capable of meeting the challenges of our changing economy. Even in our changing economic conditions, there are several New Brunswick companies looking to hire skilled individuals. Despite these openings, job seekers are not always aware of the many career opportunities available to them. That is why we value our partnership with CareerBeacon.com, which helps bring attention to the various occupations available to everyone, especially our youth.

I encourage all job seekers and recent graduates in particular, to explore the many exciting and fulfilling career opportunities available to them in various New Brunswick industries. This will benefit not only those potential employees and employers, but also the entire province.

  • Manitoba Provides 2,800 Summer Jobs For Manitoba Youth
Applications for 2,800 summer jobs through Green Teams and STEP Services are now being accepted, Healthy Living, Youth and Seniors Minister Jim Rondeau announced today.

“Many of these positions provide opportunities for youth to gain on-the-job experience in or around their fields of study and the benefits don’t stop there,” said Rondeau.  “Young people get opportunities for scholarships, employers get support for new positions and communities get help needed to pursue new projects.”

An often-overlooked benefit is the contribution that students and youth hired through programs such as the Green Teams make to summer experiences and activities for children and youth up to 15 years of age, noted Rondeau.

“This includes providing supervision and leadership for those younger than themselves to play and be involved in positive activities in their communities, to learn new skills, to discover new friends and enjoy the summer months in structured and safe environments.

“Thanks to the enthusiastic leadership of students hired through these programs, approximately 21,000 kids will experience days filled with fun, hit their beds tired at night and collect positive memories that last a lifetime.  Programs of this nature that benefit both the young employee and local kids are considered priority investments.”

Of the 2,800 jobs available this summer, an estimated 1,500 students and youth will be employed through the Urban, Hometown and Conservation Green Team programs.

The Urban and Hometown Green Teams provide summer employment for students and youth from 16 to 24 years of age.  Successful applicants work in fields like recreation, youth volunteer co‑ordination, park or trail enhancements, tourism and public education.  There are also four $500 scholarships available to students who demonstrate how their participation in a project has benefited a community.  Work assignments begin either May 1 or June 13and end Aug. 31.

The Conservation Green Team provides opportunities for employment in provincial parks and nature sites in areas such as maintenance, wildlife, forestry and interpretative services.  These jobs will begin either May 24 or July 4 and end Aug. 19.

The remaining 1,300 jobs are with STEP Services, which will employ high-school and post-secondary students looking for work in government departments, special operating agencies and Crown corporations.  The full-time summer component of STEP Services begins on April 26 and ends on Sept. 9.  Positions are available throughout Manitoba and include jobs such as lab assistants, information technologists, clerical assistants, travel counsellors and groundskeepers.

“Students gain valuable, career-related employment experience and get an idea of what it’s like to work in the civil service,” Rondeau said.  He added the STEP program, created in 1970, encourages students to consider careers in the public sector, which will help in the renewal of Manitoba’s civil service.

Since 2001, more than 14,000 jobs have been created through the provincial government’s Green Teams and STEP Services.  The Green Team and STEP programs build on other opportunities to help youth develop job-related skills and are an integral part of the province’s Youth Job Corps, which provides pre-employment supports, mentoring, coaching and jobs for more than 7,600 youth annually, the minister said.

For Hometown or Urban Green Teams, call 204-945-3556 in Winnipeg; 1-800-282-8069, ext. 3556 (toll-free); or register online at www.studentjobs.gov.mb.ca.
